A devastating explosion occurred near a rally of the Balochistan National Party (BNP) in Quetta, Pakistan, resulting in the deaths of at least 14 individuals and injuring 35 others. The incident took place on Tuesday, shortly after a memorial event for Sardar Attaullah Mengal concluded at Shahwani Stadium.
Bakht Muhammad Kakar, the Health Minister of Balochistan, confirmed the casualty figures. Initial police reports indicate that the blast was aimed at BNP leader Akhtar Mengal and his convoy, although he escaped unharmed. Security forces promptly cordoned off the area, and emergency responders transported the injured to local hospitals, with several victims reported to be in critical condition.
Sajid Tareen, a spokesperson for the BNP, stated that 13 party members lost their lives in the explosion, which occurred just after Mengal's vehicle passed the site. Tareen described the moment of the blast, emphasizing its timing with Mengal's convoy. Authorities are currently investigating whether the explosion was caused by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) or a suicide bomber. Mengal later took to social media to express his relief at being safe while mourning the loss of his party members, stating, "Their sacrifice will never be forgotten. May Allah grant them Jannah and give patience to their families."
Balochistan's Chief Minister, Mir Sarfraz Bugti, condemned the attack, labeling it a cowardly act by those opposed to peace. He remarked that such violence seeks to instill fear and disrupt stability in the region. Bugti has ordered high-quality medical treatment for the injured and called for a comprehensive investigation into the incident. He urged law enforcement to swiftly apprehend those responsible. A special committee has been established to look into the matter and provide a report, while security measures have been heightened throughout Quetta.
